About This Planting:
This 6' × 10' planting is designed as a naturalistic woodland-edge matrix for areas receiving approximately 3–5 hours of sunlight per day. The mix combines native grasses and flowering perennials that can intermingle over time, creating a layered, meadow-like transition between open lawn and the woodland edge. This design would also do fantastic against a structure that receives morning sun. Although, for small residential beds or tightly controlled gardens, these species may require regular thinning or management to prevent them from spreading beyond their intended area.
The selected species are considered relatively deer and rabbit resistant, meaning they are generally less preferred for browsing than many other landscape plants. However, resistant does not mean immune. Deer and rabbits may still sample plants, particularly when they are newly installed, during periods of food scarcity, or where browsing pressure is high. This planting is not intended to repel or deter wildlife. A physical barrier such as a metal cage is the only way to be 100% sure hungry animals stay away while plants are establishing.
Several species in this mix are vigorous, prolific spreaders once established. This is intentional and allows the planting to gradually fill open spaces, suppress weeds, and develop into a dense, self-sustaining garden. Because of this behavior, this design is best suited to larger properties, woodland margins, acreage, and open naturalized spaces where plants have room to spread. Although, regular mowing around the bed will also help keep it in check.
