My name is Sarah Terry. I grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. More specifically - Pretty Water, where the nearest neighbor was a bike ride away and the soundtrack to my childhood was birds and coyotes. After I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do in college other than work with either plants or animals, so I did what any responsible adult would: I flipped through the course catalog and picked the first degree that didn’t require math. Horticulture it was!
Unfortunately, my plan to avoid math fell through when the horticulture program at TCC shut down after I put in two semesters. Feeling defeated, I dropped out and ended up in an office job, where I realized I wasn’t built for fluorescent lights and spreadsheets. I needed to be outside. After three years of sitting at a desk, I took a pay cut and jumped at the chance to work at a hydroponic lettuce farm, where I learned about greenhouse operations and confirmed that - yes, plants were my thing! That led to a crash course in cannabis cultivation when medical marijuana was legalized in Oklahoma. That was new to us so we learned a lot along the way.
My real turning point came when I landed a job at Tulsa Botanic Garden. What started as a seasonal gig turned into a full-time position as Greenhouse Assistant, where I absorbed more plant knowledge than in any job before. I worked my way up to Nursery Manager, overseeing plant sales, making connections, and discovering my true passion - native plants. A field trip to the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie sealed the deal for me, along with participating in as many prescribed burns as I could. Seeing the vast, wild landscape made me realize that Oklahoma’s native plants weren’t just beautiful, they were necessary.
So, I started a nursery. It started as a hobby, then quickly turned into a passion. The response has been incredible, and I’m thrilled to see so many people excited about planting native. I can't wait to help restore the plants and ecosystems that once thrived here not so long ago.
